Possible problem with NovoRapid vials Batch No CS6C973
« on: 10 August 2013, 12:01:40 PM »
Hi all

Just to let you know (in case you haven't spotted it elsewhere) that there are a number of reports from people using NovoRapid who are having problems with vials from batch no CS6C973.

Symptoms are high BG unresponsive to corrections (with a handful of DKA admissions involved).

NovoNordisk are testing vials from the batch (which will take a few days) to investigate a recall.

Important to note that the vials are NOT recalled at the moment. I am using a vial from that batch myself right now and it is absolutely 100% fine.

No need to panic... But if you happen to be using that batch and get very different BGs/insulin behaviour from what you would expect it is worth bearing in mind.

If you think your vial(s) are affected, please contact Novo or report to MHRA to add info to their considerations.

Thanks!  Fortunately all my NovoRapid 3ml cartridges batch numbers start CK.

As far as I know this only affects the vials, not the pen cartridges.

I have already heard of this the past week and we are using the mentioned batch with no problems at all either. I did however ring the pharmacy who contacted Novo nordisk on my behalf and was told the same info. A few days later I received another call to say the tests were complete and no evidence was found to say the batch was faulty and there was no reason for a recall. The only way this would happen is if someone who is believed to have a faulty vial would sent it back to them and they would then test that particular vial. X

That's exactly it - if it had been left in the sun in the supply chain, once it has left NN it goes to all sorts of different warehouses, then to the pharmacy who at some point stick it in their fridge.

For all we know, the person(s) that had the problem could have left it in their car or something.  I've been known to do that, falls out of portmanteau into the footwell and don't think about it for ages afterwards.  Fortunately never insulin.  In the olden days I used to collect scrips from chemist near work at lunchtime.  In handbag then till approx. 7pm or later, when I got home.  Never used to worry and I ain't dead yet !

Good grief - I didn't know anyone still used vials of insulin!

Ah...  And there was me thinking you used the usual PenFill cartridges.

They refill their reservoirs via a syringe from the vial.  Terrifies me but I am going to have to do it!

No - the reservoir IS the syringe! (has a two-needle attachment on the end of it when you get it out of the packet) and a plunger screwed into the bung on the far end.

Nowt to be terrified about, flower !

You can use a Penfill cartridge, but it doesn't fit the attachment to the reservoir ever so well as the cartridge diameter is narrower than the vials and it's all a bit wibbly wobbly LOL
