we all know that loads of salt is not good for us but does anyone besides me use lots of pepper and herbs and have come to really enjoy pepper on their food like I do ??
Loads of anything in excess is not good for us, but the scare tactics for salt are similar to the scare tactics for saturated fats.
IIRC about a third of people may
have a link between hypertension and excess salt intake. For the rest of us it is not only an acceptable garnish it is a very necessary part of the diet. There is a reason why the tribes controlling salt sources in ancient times became rich. It was essential to health.
When I cut out all high-salt processed foods from my diet immediately after diagnosis I made the mistake of also adding no salt at all to my home-cooked food. Within a very short time the frequency and severity of my night cramps increased dramatically.
I tried using potassium salt instead. It tasted terrible and the cramps were just as bad. Eventually I returned to adding normal levels of salt to recipes and sprinkling it as I always had on my food. The cramps decreased.
Getting back to your original point, depending on the recipe or menu I regularly use any or all of: grated black pepper, turmeric, chili, parsley, cumin, paprika, cinnamon, cayenne, basil, grated parmesan, nutmeg, mint, rosemary, curry mix and lots more.
