Tens machine during labour
« on: 18 May 2015, 08:14:24 PM »
Hi there, I am 33 years old and pregnant for the first time.  I have had T1 diabetes for 30 years and have fairly good control (like most much better during pregnancy).  I was just wondering if anyone had used a tens machine during labour? I know normal tens machines are not recommended for diabetics but i was just wondering if anyone had any experience of using the pregnancy ones and if you would recommend them?

Hi there Lynne

The pregnancy section is a bit quiet right at the moment but welcome to the forum.

I have seen all the comments over the past 7 years and I don't think anyone used Tens... have you spoken to your midwife?

Thank you very much to you both. I spoke with my community midwife yesterday and she wasn't sure at all. I will speak with the midwife and consultants at my diabetic antenatal clinic next week, i was just hoping to hear that someone else had used one without any issues :) I will let you know what they say next week incase anyone else was wondering about this too

I was never told I couldn't use a TENS machine, unfortunately I never got the chance (fast labour) I can;t see why it would be an issue though

I didn't use one. But bear in mind if your body doesn't induce quickly and they have to use oxytocin you'll be on four drips plus the foetal monitor and so you may not want any extra wires to tangle. But that'd be a personal preference thing.
T1 diagnosed 1985, DAFNE Oct 2012 (HBA 9.2%), started pumping April 2013.
HBAs: Feb 2013 8.6%, Jan 2014 7.4%, June 2014 5.9%, Jan 2015 7.5%
Healthy baby delivered Nov 2014 predicted 97th+centile but actually 50th centile.

Lynne could possibly find herself on a sliding scale too - dunno what arrangements she has made/they are making for her, or what regime she's on !
