Escape the diet trap by Dr. John Briffa
« on: 28 December 2015, 06:31:15 PM »
I've recently purchased the above book and have begun to read it.  Would like to know if anyone else has read the book and your opinion of the book?

No, sorry Kathy, I've not heard of it.  Perhaps you could give us a review when you've read it and let us know if it's worth reading?

I'm surprised you've never read the book as the author is from the UK (I think).  So far he talks about low carb being a better way to control your blood sugar.  I should have read the book before Christmas and not after. .  .  .   .   :(

Kathy, we have thousands of UK authors, I certainly haven't read them all.  Personally I rarely read "inspirational" or self improvement books, well, never.  I prefer novels.  However John Briffa does write a very good blog http://www.drbriffa.com/ which I have read quite a lot of.  He does make a lot of sense.

I also sometimes read Dr B's blogs.  He has been blogging for literally years and I suspect might not actually be saying anything in the book, that he hasn't blogged about in the past?  But of course I don't know whether you have ever read his Blogs.

I read Dr Briffa's blog until he stopped writing on it last year after the birth of his daughter. He is a very good doctor, into low carb and everything, like Dr Malcolm Kendrick. Some years ago he was on a televised debate about cholesterol and statins - he was in the anti statin side :) Here's his blog so others can get an idea about him: http://www.drbriffa.com

Being as I am technically challenged, I haven't read very many blogs by authors like Dr. B.  I guess what impressed me the most about what I've read so far is that one does not have to make a whole bunch of changes all at once in order to benefit from low carb eating.  So many forums here in the U.S. are dogmatic and they have run off people that are not in agreement with them.

Doesn't have to be in the US... there are people in the UK who get all shirty if you don't toe the line - silly if you ask me cos surely it's about support and not bullying?

I have just sent off for a secondhand copy of this book for £2.81 including postage.  I need to do something to lose weight as I have put on about 6lbs since the start of autumn.

I also have "The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet: Lose weight fast and reprogramme your body" by Michael Moseley.  It arrived yesterday but I haven't had time to look through it yet.

I am hoping to lose weight when I become active again in the spring but may need to read these books to spur me on.  At the moment, I have been getting very tired and I keep dropping off to  sleep throughout the day.  Maybe the books will give me some inspiration to lose weight as I haven't been able to keep up with my housework.  I haven't even started sorting out my chilli and other seeds whereas this time last year, they were all sown and under heat lamps in the utility room.
Diabetes Type2 diagnosed March 2014.  Treated by diet only.  HbA1c 60 on diagnosis, 52 in June 2014, 50 October 2014, 44 December 2014, 48 May 2015, 50 Sep 2015, 53 Jan 2016, 50 Oct 2016, 56 Feb 2017, 50 Jun 2017. 50 Aug 2017.  Pacemaker fitted 2008.

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want 'em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

If you grow tired and drop off to sleep during the day, is there any possibility that you might have sleep apnea?  Sometimes people have sleep apnea and are not even aware of it.  I know I was not aware but after a sleep study and I was diagnosed - I feel much better after using a cpap machine.
