Alan

Olohajoke was banned by me yesterday.  a. for his senseless comment on an old thread which led me to b. investigating spam sources.

One would think the spammers would get wise to this, though of course they may get away with it in a large forum.

Generally financial.

Spam might contain links to something else for instance porn or pharmaceuticals etc, sometimes trojans or other malicious software.

The "innocuous" looking comment above is probably sent to a million different places per day, some of which hit the mark, some don't, prob from some kind of spambot rather than an actual person.

I could understand it if it had any links but it doesn't, unless the forum automatically prevented a link from being posted? If so yay, way to go DSF  :)

The software does not allow new members to post links Q.  They have to make a sp3cified number of posts first.

There isn't always a link directly involved. Often on blog sites a URL can be associated with the commenter's username instead of being posted outright in the message (there isn't one in this case, or it was blocked or removed with the ban perhaps?). This can still generate some traffic to the person's website and/or increase their SEO. More sophisticated bots may be trying to rack up a post count first so that their link, when eventually posted, looks more like it's coming from a legitimate member.
