2017 Weight Loss Thread
« on: 15 February 2017, 05:59:09 PM »
I thought I would start a new thread as I need to motivate myself. Over the last few months the weight has crept on a bit. At the moment I am 101kg with a target of 85kg. Strangely my GP practice seem to have gone semi-metric - height in imperial units and weight in metric. I imagine someone in their IT team wrote a bespoke BMI calculator!  :)

I need to get started since I have piled on weight whilst not on Metformin.  Up until 1 March though we have so many social events involving eating that I think I will start next month.

Yeah count me in.  I keep trying to kid myself that I haven't put on weight.  I'm in Spain until the end of March and will join once I get home.

Having put on 8 lbs this winter, I decided to do something about it as I had started eating sweets, chocolate, ice cream and cakes and it seemed the more I ate, the more I became addicted to them.  My HbA1c had also risen as I was not sticking to my diet. I realised that if I carried on like this that I could end up with amputations, eye problems and all the other nasty things that go with high bg levels.

Five days ago I started a very strict regime and my meter readings since then are so much better.  Not only are they down, but I weighed myself this morning and I am already losing weight.  I feel so much happier too.  ;D

Glad to hear that Pauline!

As of yesterday I had dropped 4lbs, but 3/4 lb back on this morning.  I am currently stuffing jelly beans due to a hypo which occurred whilst I was holding onto the phone endlessly listening to (albeit rather pleasant) music whilst trying to get through to M&S bank.  They rang this morning about my application for a store card (which I was pushed into by the assistant last week) and I was none too sure if the call was genuine so opted to ring them back on a number from their website... passed from pillar to post.... enough to induce a hypo in anyone!

I was weighed in hospital (that's another story) and it seems the bathroom scales are reading a few kg high. So it is off to Argos when I feel up to it.  :)

Sadly Pauline - we don't actually enjoy anything we use to treat hypos - I have concluded that it isn't possible for the body to experience enjoyment whilst the brain is experiencing hypo conditions - it goes into a totally different mode - the 'life saving' one I presume.

I've never actually thought about it properly before - all I know is, that's what it feels like to me.

Interesting though, is everyone else the same? - what do others who have hypos think?

The Jelly beans are (on a sliding scale) several points up on the enjoyment scale from glucose tabs, but they take longer to work and no.... they are not that enjoyable at the time - at least not enough to remove my caution about eating too many!

I went to bed about 12;30 am this morning on a level of 6.0mmol and woke at 02:30 from an unpleasant dream sweating copiously.  Tested 3.3mmol. Ate 3 glucose tabs and within 15 mins I was 6.0 so tried to go back to sleep.  Unfortunately that was it until around 6:30 when I did finally sleep.  This morning I weighed 11st 21/4lbs.  Thought I'd have a pee and re-weigh... oops, bad idea 11st 3lbs!  Scales are barking, though I had moved them a fraction on the carpet.

I realise that my basals are probably a bit out since ramping up metformin again, but as yet I can discern no pattern.

I don't enjoy anything i eat when hypo - your brain shuts off anything unnecesary and i'm not sure enjoying the taste is something it sees as necesary. If its only say 3.8 or 3.9 maybe i would enjoy it a bit more but i'm getting more hypo symptoms there now than previously and finding the hypo brain does kick in.

It's bloody annoying too, having to eat stuff you don't want when you're trying to lose weight!

Dr D hope your new scales are more accurate, the last thing you need is scales that weigh kilos too heavy!
