I eat fruit and veg because I enjoy them, not for any other purpose really.  Even so, I'd be hard pushed to eat 10 a day.

Wasn't this always the case but they thought 10 was too much for the UK so said 5? Maybe I'm miss remembering that. I mostly just have veg that I want because I like it. I also cook for two mostly so I'm bluking out the veg on my plate to replace carbs. I still have carbs but in smaller amounts and just have more low carb veg.

Fruit I eat 1 or 2 a day. Sometimes more with fruit salad.

I had a slice of strawberry at lunchtime accidentally (it had fallen off a strawberry sponge where the ravening hordes had attacked the platter of cakes on the buffet LOL) but otherwise no  fruit and scarcely any veg today - but that's exceedingly rare these days!

Had a very enjoyable day today - can you believe that in this day and age with all the computer war games, sex, drugs, violence, etc etc etc - this afternoon we witnessed (and laughed like drains) at and with five 20 yo's playing hide and seek with two 5 yo's - and ALL of them having enormous fun !

Sounds like a blast Sedge!

I do not know why they would think that 10 was too much "for the UK".  Having travelled extensively I do not know of another country who eat more than the UK.  Having said that, there certainly are most impressive fruit and veg displays in supermarkets in the US, France and Aus, to name but 3.  However you don't see peeps eating them or supermarket trolleys loaded with em.... if you eat out in any of those countries there will be few veg on your plate.

One of the problems when travelling foreign lands is restaurants which cater for tourists with bland menus and minimal veg. I try to eat with the locals in small worker's cafes and similar, but even in those the veg choices are often minimal. In Peru it was so poor (the origin of spuds and corn and it seemed not much else for veges) I ate at Chinese restaurants every third evening to get a decent serve of stir-fried or steamed veges.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Alan, I'm not speaking as a "tourist" having travelled the world extensively for 18 years as crew.  We usually ate where the locals ate, because it was cheaper.  Julian worked in France for some time and we know that the best places to eat are where the lorry drivers go... though in latter years we have gone more frequently to more upmarket places, though not if we don't see a fair sprinkling of locals there.  There are mountains of veg in French supermarkets, but you rarely get more than green beans and some form of potato in their restaurants.  It's just a complete mystery as to who consumes these veg.

It's a while since we visited Auz and of course Julian's brother and his wife spent most of their adult years in the states And so developed their eating habits there.  I craved veg whilst I was staying with them, but apart from iceberg lettuce and salad we only got veg when I went to the supermarket bought and cooked it.

Went out for Sunday lunch a week or so ago here with friends.  Along with the meat and Yorkshire puds we were served, roast potatoes, parsnips, red and white cabbage, sprouts and carrots.  Too much for me in truth!😏

Don't mean to "go on" but it is indeed a subject which has fascinated me for years.
