Long time, no see / hear from!!
« on: 04 April 2017, 06:46:55 PM »
Hi folks

Life gets in then way at times and it seems its been so long since I was on the forum.

I still refer to some of the wonderful recipes on here tho, particularly the cheese muffins and cakes lol

TBH I am not managing myself well at all in either conditions - diabetes 2 and Coeliac but further to a visit with a dietician this week, I am propelled into addressing my denials and at least make a good effort to get back on track...I did not agree with all she had to say especially re the LCHF way of eating and went on about the high risk to heart problems further down the line etc etc but did take on board some useful points she stated.

Part of me wants to prove her wrong - entirely but other part of me wonders if there is any truth in it?

So, hopefully, once again, I will plan meals and shop accordingly....and get my bgs under the lower end of the teens

Hi Poppet

Welcome back.

So what DID the dietitian say?  "You need carbs for energy" or was it "too much fat will clog your arteries"?
Let's hope we can help you get back on track!

Let's face it, you can't be feeling great with high BGs or with coeliac reactions.  So onward and upward eh?

Thanks Patti

Basically she was saying that's a dangerous way to eat, she actually thought I was having NO carbs which I did not say or give her the impression of. She just mentioned serious heart disease and was evidence of the high fat diet causing this and they seeing the results in the hospital.

Actually, I am not sure what's making me feel as I do....my bgs are hovering around 13 by mid afternoon and back under 10 by late afternoon...but am also being treated for this Giant cell artiritis, polymyalgia, osteo arthritis in both knees and hips and with degeneration of my spine plus facet joint issues hey ho, how do I feel!!

Seriously, I do need to get my eating in priority because this WILL HELP me...

None at all. My doc has never mentioned that again, nor has he pushed a statin, after he sent me a couple of years ago for the stress ECG and heart ultrasound which both came back clear. I call my version low-spike, but in dietician's terms I would call it LCMFMP: low carb, moderate fat, moderate protein. I simply have different definitions for 'moderate'.

Using similar acronyms for the "heart healthy" diet the dieticians have pushed for half a century I would call it ECULF: excessive carbs ultra low fat.

Would it be presumptuous of me to gently suggest it may be time for a back to basics review?

Morning!

Am in trouble, GP rang last night and asked me to book in  to  see the DN. I asked if my HbA1c back as was only taken day before......yup it was and at 89 the GP said I had deteriorated bg control.

I am planning to spend the day planning low carb meals, get rid of easter choc lurking and anything else I can think to do to help me.

Think they need to look at the whole picture tho, the meds am on, the ongoing pain, and stress but not trying to hind behind excuses am genuinely struggling to remain on top.

I am sorry to hear about your latest HbA1c, pms, and hope they can sort out your meds for you.  Mine went up because I started eating milk chocolate and ice cream again.  It seemed the more I ate, the more I wanted.  I was also back to eating wine gums again.  I decided to be strict with myself and remove them from my diet and I don't miss them now.

It's not easy to stick to a low carb diet, pms, so I hope all goes well for you.
Diabetes Type2 diagnosed March 2014.  Treated by diet only.  HbA1c 60 on diagnosis, 52 in June 2014, 50 October 2014, 44 December 2014, 48 May 2015, 50 Sep 2015, 53 Jan 2016, 50 Oct 2016, 56 Feb 2017, 50 Jun 2017. 50 Aug 2017.  Pacemaker fitted 2008.

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want 'em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

I think when you see the DSN you really must point out to her that many of your medications and in paticular the steroids do impact on your diabetic control and not just allow her to run roughshod over you.

Meantime yes, you do need to curb the carbs as much as you can to try to ameliorate the effects of the meds... but you don't need me to tell you that  :)
