Peculiar happening.
« on: 16 September 2017, 07:55:15 PM »
Whilst going through all the shenanigans of buying this house and whilst we were staying with a friend my BGs were consistently in the 7 - 11 range and there seemed nothing I could do to reduce them.  My face also broke out in a really nasty case of Rosacea.  At long last, after 4 lots of the antibiotic ointment over the past 2 or 3 years that did little to stop it, the Doc saw how bad it was this time and put me on a course of 6 - 12 weeks of Oxytetracycline.  I was collecting them from the chemist when I got into conversation with the pharmacist who's partner also suffers from Rosacea and we were talking about stress and how it can affect you physically even though you aren't mentally acknowledging it.  Anyway, I said to him that it made Diabetes very hard to control and it was very obvious when, after we had moved in, my BGs had suddenly started to behave themselves and gone back to normal without me altering anything, because my FBGs have gone back to 5 or 6 and BGs have been really good all day.

Fast forward to today - and this I don't really understand.  I woke at 7 am and didn't test until 8:30 when it was 6.0.  Didn't have breakfast for a while as I have to take the ABs on an empty stomach 1.5 to 2 hours before a meal.  At 10:44 I had a slice of toast and bolussed for it.  Went off and did some errands, picking up some house plants from a friend who's been looking after them for me.  Nothing very strenuous.  Came home and did a bit of tidying, again nothing strenuous.  At 1:30 I made salmon and cucumber sarnies for lunch, 24g carb for 2 slices of Burgen + 3g carb for the mayonnaise.  I was 5.8 before lunch and I Bolussed 3u insulin and ate right away.  At 2pm I felt very peculiar and tested 2.9!!!  Ate 3 glucose tabs and a cereal bar which only brought me up to 3.3, so I had a handful of jelly beans.  We have a sort of loose permanent arrangement to meet up with friends in the pub in town on a Saturday afternoon, usually 8 to 10 of us.  So we got the bus into town.

I had 1 drink, which I sipped very slowly and I began to feel really sick.  I thought nothing much until Julian prompted me to test and I thought "ah, of course, over-treated the hypo and I'm high, which always makes me feel rather nauseous", but no, I was only 6.2.  Anyway, left the rest of my drink and got the bus home... and fell asleep for the rest of the afternoon.  Never had a hypo affect me like that and I don't understand how I could have had a hypo a mere half hour or less after finishing eating!

How the hell do they expect us to manage and control this disease when it does such inexplicable things and changes the goal posts so often?

Pfft.  I no longer bat an eyelid at such things!

There is no point whatsoever wasting time trying to find out why - use the effort for doing something you like once you've spent a short time wondering why and failed is my only advice.

However - how long since you did a full, 24 hour basal test?  In a perfect world you'd have already started it, LOL

How long since you tested your bolus ratios?  Ditto.

Everything WILL have changed - you've been firefighting for several years - the old house was repeatedly on the market with all the accompanying hassle, then J had cancer, the sale purchase and moving in for this one aren't even over properly yet and in 5 minutes time it will be Xmas and people will expect the usual Evans largesse - otherwise the comments like 'You'd have thought they'd have asked us over by now - after all we haven't even seen their new house yet!' will start.

No you haven't - and perhaps this is a hint they don't want you to either .......  LOL

Take a chill pill Mrs - this IS diabetes - and we are stuck with it!

PS - I know you know but anyone random reading this might think differently - those comments were written with a great deal of empathy cos I've certainly been there done that failed to find the answer so many times and no longer bother worrying unduly if I can't solve it.

If it DOES worry me then I ask - on here, maybe on the DUK forum and/or my DSN if I remember when next seeing her.  Sure thing is - I don't lose any sleep now!

I know how it was meant Sedge!  You are right on one or two things certainly... it's been stressy for the past year at least.  It's ages and ages since I have done 24 hour basal testing.  I keep putting it off with "when this is done, when I've got over... when we move in...."  Bolus ratios were reset by the DSN when I saw her in July.  I have a follow up appointment on 11 October.  I've been thinking it would be ideal if I could get a Libre sensor to put on 2 weeks before that.  Sod the expense, I think I will!

I confess I am very teed off with people asking "are you all settled in now".  Oh yes, in 10 days we've got all the furniture where we want it, a shed built, loft boarded, everything unpacked and tidily put away and all the pictures and curtains hung and of course I'll take pictures and put them up on Facebook!  NOT!  I wonder when they last moved, how much stuff they had and how long it took them to be "settled in".   So far not one room is "straight"... more like an untidy collection of boxes.

It's bad enough when you decorate one room. isn't it?

Unless you're practically OCD about 'everything in its place' inevitably one always lands up with a huge pile of things that never belonged in that location anyway - and now I'm very strict with myself - How long has it been there, how many times have I needed to look for it or had any use for it, in the last two years? - if never - consign it to the bin!

If it turns out next week you desperately need it well buy another! - but bet you don't need to!

Sadly Pete has not joined in ....... only with 'my' stuff !

Wish I could 'like' your comment twice.  :)

Patti - Moving house and all that entails is a huge chore.  My best wishes to you and J as you are settling in, and I hope you will be very happy in your new home.

As for BG readings, my situation yesterday is nowhere near as important as your situation.  However our refrigerator quit working early in the morning.  We spent the rest of the day shopping for a replacement which the store cannot deliver until Wednesday.  Since I had not had a chance to fix myself breakfast I thought my BG would be ok....wrong!  It climbed to 10.1 and I hadn't eaten.  Diabetes plays mean tricks on us at times.

Ooops Kathy

Sorry to hear about your fridge.  I hope you've managed to get a replacement now.  On our household insurance we have a small section for insurance of frozen food in the event of the freezer breaking or electricity cuts etc.

As you say... everything and anything affects BGs!

Sedge... I'm not too worried what people think of the house.. it will get there, it was just the implication that we should have it "all done" already and were failing if we hadn't.  I caught myself yesterday thinking that it would be quite nice to invite some particular friends who don't spend a lot of time in the UK, over for lunch before they jet off again.  They won't give a fig whether it's finished or not.

When did we actually finish our bathroom?

Well shock horror, we still have no blind at the window (it's obscured glass anyway and absolutely not possible for anyone to see in even when it's open) and no mirror on the wall - I still automatically go towards it when I actually want to see and do it automatically anyway as I turn to flush the loo!

No completely decided it's going back there anyway cos a tile would have to be drilled.  I've also not found a storage unit the right size that I like - my mom had a 3ft 6 wide charcoal grey, 'Utility' tallboy about 4ft high - I want it, now! - Two decent sized cupboards underneath with two not too deep drawers (where dad kept his socks underwear clean jamas etc - ideal!   LOL

Sad to say Patti that the refrigerator replacement cannot be delivered until Wednesday, 20 September later in the day.  Rather hard to prepare healthy meals without refrigeration to begin with.  Never knew about insurance for frozen goods, must look into that here.

Your friends will love your company, not the state of your new home.  Have a great time.

The insurance comes as a part of your home content insurance here.  Not sure it would be worth taking out a policy specifically for that purpose unless you really had tons of expensive food in there.  I have only once had a freezer fail on me and that was in 1979 just after I had moved to a new house.  The removals company had put it in the kitchen and switched it straight on - you are supposed to leave it several hours after handling without switching it on to let things settle.  I was away when it happened and arrived home to open the door and find a stinking mess!

I wasn't last night!  Got home from Truro and other stops east via multiple traffic jams at 7.15 pm and it was too late to prepare the meal I had planned so we went across the road to the pub - fish and chip night there.  £8.50 each for the best fish and chips I have eaten in a decade.  Was incredibly tired when we got home and went to bed at 10pm, only to wake at 1:45 with a BG of 2.1.  Glucose tabs, a cereal bar and pump turned down to 60%.  Finally got back to 5.3 at 2:30.  Woke again at 3:15 back down to 3.3.  More glucose tabs, pump reduced to 50% and a trip to the kitchen for biscuits later I must have dropped off about 3:45.  Man to fix sofa legs arrived at 7:45 am!!!!  I woke at 15.4.  Utterly shattered and off for an afternoon zizz now!
