While we're showing holiday pics. This was my chariot in Pilanesberg; my seat was close to where the guide is standing. Note the canvas for protection.

She came closer than two metres from my seat. She looked hungry...
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

What a lovely picture of those lionesses, Alan.

I wouldn't have felt safe travelling in that truck though.  There doesn't seem to be a lot of protection.

I don't have any photos of the night in the game park, but back in about 1984/5 Julian and I were on a Harare trip (as crew) with a week off.  So we got air tickets down to Victoria Falls along with another 6 crew, where we stayed in the Vic Falls Hotel and had a wonderful time for 3 or 4 nights, going on a light aircraft over the falls (mega scary when it hit the updrafts) and cycled over to Zambia for lunch, not to mention a flutter in the Casino there one night + several native dance shows.  Oh and had a tour of an old steam train, courtesy of the Engineer with us who was a steam train enthusiast and chatted up the driver.

On the way back we flew via Hwange (Wankie) Game Park where we stayed for one night in Tent Camp.  First we had a drive around in an open Land Rover at dusk to see the animals at the watering holes.  We then proceeded to the camp where the staff prepared a BBQ for us.  It was great fun in the middle of the bush.... all having a beer and eating this delicious BBQ game when, about 10pm, we heard crashing in the bushes not far away.  The warden took us quietly to look (I distinctly recall we all had bottles of beer in our hands) and it was a herd of female elephants with their young, some almost near enough to touch, though he warned us it was dangerous.  He then said we could go to see the male herd.  We piled into the Land Rover again and headed for a watering hole set in open country.  We were astonished to see about 100 bulls of all ages... eeerily lit up by the moonlight, having mock fights and playing together.  We went into a "hide" which was like a concrete bunker and watched through an open slit window for about half an hour until an elephant backed right up and passed wind into the bunker, at which point, gagging, we filed out and re-boarded the Land Rover.  That eerie moonlit landscape with the elephants is still one of the most exciting and enduring memories of my 18 years as crew.  Back at camp we went to bed in our tents... to be woken before dawn by a shot.  The "boys" had found a wild pig rooting in the camp supplies and shot it.  We all went on a dawn drive and saw lots of animals, giraffes, zebra, gazelles etc + a rhinocerous with it's little one.  We had seen hippopotami down on the river at Vic Falls when we had done a sunset cruise previously.  After we returned to camp we had showers in the open air and then a huge cooked breakfast.  It was a wonderful "holiday" and we returned to Harare bubbling over with the experience.

I'll try to find some photos of the Land Rover and the flight of the Angels over the falls.  Will have to find the old albums and scan them.
Patti

Just as an aside... I find it a very sad comment that elephants are in danger of extinction due to poaching, whereas back then they were so plentiful!

Last year... Corfu town from the passenger ferry to Paxos.

From the passenger ferry again.  Corfu to the left, Vidos Island to the right and the mountains of Albania

Well I haven't been to nearly as many exotic places as you lot! But last year I did get to go to Chambery in Savoie, my first time leaving North America! We had lovely weather up until the last day we were there. Loved learning about the history of the place. Would have liked to have seen more of the countryside around, but we were a bit nervous to go very far as the trains were on strike!

A couple from our last trip to "the old home place," where we took a side trip to Silver Springs. It was winter, so there's a lot of gray and brown, but still quite a lot of life as you can see!
