Oooops!
« on: 11 December 2017, 07:33:19 PM »
Last Tuesday I set up my new pump.  I carefully updated my spreadsheet with all the data off my old pump and duly set the new one up with the same basals/correction factors/insulin sensitivity etc.   All has been fine so far until this morning.  Last week I finished the course of Oxytetracycline that had been increasing insulin sensitivity and until yesterday nothing much moved as far as basal needs.  Yesterday my FBG was slightly elevated at 7 and today I forgot to do an FBG until just before I had a slice of toast at 10 am when I tested 9.0.  Dialled in 17g carb, 12g for the Burgen and 5g for a spoon of home made marmalade.  Vaguely thought that if FBG was raised again tomorrow I'd do a tiny bit of adjusting of basal from about 4am.

Anyway, fast forward to lunch time, after I had done a grocery shop, put everything away and prepared a sandwich.  I tested 3.5 before lunch, so I didn't do a bolus as I thought I'd do one after.  However, afterwards I was only 3.9 so I ate a packet of two biscuits (those Biscoff malt things) and then got busy and forgot to test again until 6pm and I was 5.9 so I thought "curious, not had any insulin for lunch".  Next thing it's 7pm and I'm hypo - 2.8.  Scratching my head for the reason.... so I looked at my data and noticed that I'd done 11.8u for 17g carb at breakfast..... EH?  WHAT?  When I checked my settings I'd put in my insulin sensitivity as 1u to 0.3mmol instead of 1u to 3.0mmol!!!!!!

Still not quite sure why that should affect me 7 hrs later.... but glad I picked it up now!

Weeelllll things got even more peculiar.

Dinner on the table at 8;15 pm - I tested 5.0.  I dialled in 45g carb (bit of a guesstimate) for 3 large roast potatoes,  6 pieces roast parsnip, roast beef and gravy, black kale with cream and goat's cheese, to be followed by a fruit platter - melon, raspberries, strawberries, 1/2 a pear, some sharon fruit.  The meter advised no bolus???? What... so I kept an eye on things.  21:45 7.8 and it's still advising no bolus.  I dialled in 0.4u manually, also ate two chocolate truffles for no reason other than J had 2 and made lots of yum noises so willpower was lacking!
22:18 it was 9.4 this time it advised 0.3u
13:38 10.5 and it advised 0.9u
00:02 10.7 and it advised the most sensibly of all boluses 2.9u
At 03:03 I was 6.0
08:54 6.8

Also every 2nd strip I put in won't register and wake the handset up.  I am wondering if there's something a bit wrong with the handset.  What do peeps think?

Rather concerned as I am going away tomorrow for 3 days.

The batteries should have been OK since I only started using this handset a week ago, however, it came with batteries in it, so I have changed them.  As it happens I was on the last one of a pot of strips and it did activate the screen.  Looking in my box I discovered that out of the pots of strips I have there is only one pot with a different number, so I'm using that one.
We'll see what happens now.

However, it's the pump, not the handset which calculates doses isn't it?  Can't compare with the old pump as I have put it into storage with batteries out, so I think it would have to be set up again wouldn't it?

One meter helpline (can't remember which!? but I think it was for my Expert) suggested putting the 'wrong' end of a strip in and out a few times to see if that cleared any dust or fluff from the strip port - can't imagine yours would have any time for fluff to have built up though!

I know Paul... I was a bit silly not to override the ridiculous breakfast dose, but frankly I just didn't notice.  At the time I was carrying on a conversation, thinking about a shopping list and various other things!

As to the evening I was at a bit of a loss and decided to see what happened.  So much going on at the moment with ordinary life due to the time of year, let alone D.  We sometimes would just like to stick it on a back burner wouldn't we?
