Stuck At Same Weight For Months!
« on: 19 December 2017, 01:17:42 PM »
Been stuck around 92 - 93kg for some months. I put on about 3kg when we went on a short break but lost it easily and stuck again. No idea how to start losing again as neither carbs nor calories are high! Any ideas on how to get my weight moving down again - my target has been set at 85kg!

I am stuck too.  I lost a stone in 5 months but have stayed at the same weight for a few weeks now.  I must admit to being tempted with a little dark chocolate at times and have also had some ice cream.  Apart from those two things, I have been eating very low carb and have avoided root vegetables, rice, pasta, bread and flour products.

I know that the little treats I have are because everything is out of sync at the moment as John is unwell and has been in and out of hospital.  Also, with Christmas around the corner, I feel I need some nice things.   It's very hard too because our son has been doing all the cooking whilst John and I  have been decorating and we have been eating very late.

At least I know what my new year resolution will be! ....... the same as it is every year, ie. to lose weight!
Diabetes Type2 diagnosed March 2014.  Treated by diet only.  HbA1c 60 on diagnosis, 52 in June 2014, 50 October 2014, 44 December 2014, 48 May 2015, 50 Sep 2015, 53 Jan 2016, 50 Oct 2016, 56 Feb 2017, 50 Jun 2017. 50 Aug 2017. 47 Feb 2018  Pacemaker fitted 2008 - replaced 2017.

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want 'em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

dieting on top of dealing with Diabetes can be quite intimidating ( at least it is for me psychologically )

doing one's best for a number of days and then being totally undone by an unexpected hypo - shall we ask slimming world their views on dealing with hypo's -- LOL

Most of these slimming clubs advocate calorie reduction as the way to lose weight but ultimately this method is doomed to failure (which is probably why they recommend it so you keep paying your subs !).

Dr Jason Fung explains why (length 38 min.) -

Quite an annoying Christmas for me. Whist I kept good BGs over Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day I also had a couple of nasty spikes (in the high teens) and some head banging hypos (down to 2.8 once) on other days. Most annoying is that I have crept up to 98kg so all the post-holiday (autumn break) loss has been lost!

I will watch the video recommended by TerryJ in the next day or two. A few year's ago I ent to WW with my partner but didn't go again because I said that unlimited fruit was a load of rubbish because of the sugar (fructose) hit! She is at SW now and being told zero carbs! Not useful if low carb'ing!

I have found diets don't work mostly down to you restricting yourself to much then binge eating or going back to your old eating habits.
But I have found mindful eating learning how to reprogram your brain your relationship with food so on is working for me I use a hypnotise app every night as I go to bed called easyloss this hypnotise reinforces the guild lines and there quite simple really
1  only eat when you are hungry
2  stop eating as soon as you no longer feel hungry not when you feel full
3 drink water lots of it I aim for 4 liters per day
4 eat what you want not what you can
5 eat slowly  ( this helps the brain keep up as you will no longer be hungry way before your brain knows it )

I have been doing this since July losing 1st 10lbs and dropping 2 dress sizes yes I still have bad days were I eat more but far less of them the main thing in last few weeks I have notiesed  is over Christmas I had my full dinner but a lot smaller portion than I used to and still left over 1/3 of it never herd of before I also don't think about food morning noon and night like I used too

Points 1 and 2 are slightly awkward with my insulin regime. I tend to take the same dose and carb count (low carb'ing). Not wanting to just eat carbs I do try to keep the calorie count down with lean meat, salad, etc.

Well done Sami.  2 dress sizes is marvellous!

Dr D.
I tend to take the same dose and carb count (low carb'ing). Not wanting to just eat carbs I do try to keep the calorie count down with lean meat, salad, etc.

So if you are taking the same dose every meal and eating carbs to match the dose then that's surely not carb counting?  Or rather it's doing it backwards which sort of misses the point.  What do you mean when you say you are low carbing?  How many grams per day?

Dr D still uses porcine Patti, which isn't available in the same manifestations and doesn't behave in exactly the same way as the purely synthetic insulins most of us use - only bovine has stopped in the UK, porcine is still available from Wockhardt.

Since I'm not entirely certain what's what (ie the properties thereof) with either Hypurin nor Neutral varieties, even though I was using porcine Ultralente for a good many years - I can't comment on what Dr D is doing - other than to say it was exactly 'having to eat to the insulin' that made the bulk of us want to distance ourselves from the 'mixed' variety of Isophanes etc in the first place.

However Pumper Sue used to pump using bovine and did very well for years so we know normal carb counting can be managed by the right type of insulin and its correct management - but then again with the added complication of her Addison's she only needed a very very small amount of insulin overall, not like the rest of us - so dunno how well any of us might be able to manage with it nowadays.

Sue by the way is using Fiasp now since she went for the one she'd never tried before  - which is different again to manage, from what we're used to!

Sorry, should have read Dr D's sig.  Porcine is before my time and I confess I know nothing about it.

I do recall Pumper Sue being on it.  Wonder how she is getting on with Fiasp, bearing in mind Mike's (EDUAD) experience with it.

Anyhoo... you have cleared up one small mystery.  I am just transferring names and addresses from an old and very tatty address book that has multiple crossings out as people have moved, into a nice clean new one.  I came across an entry for "Sue XXXXX" and a phone number and I couldn't for the life of me think who it was, but I now recall it's Pumper Sue.

My current carb intake has come down from 250gms to around 100 - 110 per day. Yes I take the same dose and count carbs so yes reverse carb counting so to speak! I also limit fat intake to keep total calories down as I am struggling to lose weight!
