Had a lovely surprise this afternoon as it happens. I went to have my eyes re-tested having been signed off from the hospital last week, after my successful cataract removal. As the opthalmologist said then 'You are wearing someone else's glasses!' LOL (so don't delay getting em retested and new specs) So yes, less strong prescriptions in both eyes. Good!
Then out I came into the shop to try and choose some frames - TBH none that I really liked so chose a pair that we thought were 'OK' - £130 so not the heapest or most expensive. But £203 for the ruddy lenses - £333. Yeah OK years ago I did indeed pay that just for the frames when I fell in love with a fantastic pair of Polaris that i really HAD to own but i certainly wasn't in love with these - and Pete was in agreement. So I declined but asked them to write it all down in case I came back tail between legs etc.
Next stop (via younger daughter's) Asda. One pair I thought were OK and might do if I didn't find another pair. Oh yes, I think these might suit? Yeah, they are more me, for definite. What are these going to cost then, with 'wide angle' varifocals? Well those will be £45 she replied. Oh well, didn't notice how much the frames were, but should be uder £200 as there were eg £80 or £110 or £130 .... thought both of us. OK let's have them then. measurements taken, prescription details noted on their system, order placed.
I'm sorry - we do ask for full payment right away but they'll take a week to a fortnight to come in. OK, I'll pay by debit card .... £45 then she says. Pete said - Are you certain that's correct? Definitely she replied. So that's what I paid!
Exactly how utterly ridiculous is that? I'm damn sure they both have to make a ruddy profit.
