Title: YAAY! In at last!
Post by: Pattidevans on 08 September 2017, 09:39:45 AM
Big day yesterday, we moved into our new home.  Furniture arrived, minus 2 new sofas to be delivered on Saturday.... and the BT engineer came and we now have a landline and broadband!  It's a bit of a mess still, and lots of hard work will be needed to get straight... but we spent our first night here last night (went to the local pub for bangers and mash last night).  The house has many fantastic advantages, including halving our monthly bills, and a few down sides... e.g. The upstairs has shrunk dramatically with the introduction of furniture!  No, wardrobes or linen cupboard, but a little ingenuity should cure that... meantime clothes on the floor in piles and hanging racks cluttering the place.

Broadband router is in the sitting room... my PC is in the study (3rd bedroom) and it needs to be plugged into the modem with an Ethernet cable as it's not Wifi enabled... might be time to give in and get a laptop as the iPad is fab but there are things I cannot do with it.

Congratulations. If wiring the PC up to the internet is an issue you could look at getting a wifi adaptor? I think you get ones that you pug into the usb drive to wifi enable the pc though i've never used one myself

Glad to hear you are finally in.

Like Lucy said you could get a wireless usb adapter for the PC or if you know someone they could fit an internal one most likely.

Got a wifi adapter this afternoon so am back on line on my PC!  Cost £32.99 - every time we turn around since we moved we seem to have to shell out for something or other!  Julian is constantly running round to the Range to get bits of DIY stuff, doormat, toilet roll holders etc etc.

It's expensive to move! Hope you have your new sofas now!

Yes, we have the sofas, but the screws provided to affix the legs were not long enough, so we have the sofas with the transit legs on until they can send out an upholsterer with correct screws.  Meantime after they were delivered I went back up to the "study" (aka bedroom 3) to discover that my PC had died.  Seems somewhat permanent.  So I am back on the iPad again.

Still, on the bright side I won 2 lots of £25 in the premium bonds and some lovely friends sent us a case of wine as a housewarming pressie😀😀

So, we rang our tame IT expert who described something to try (take out all memory cards and then resite them) and lo and behold I am up and working again!

No, not really V.  It was quite sensible advice, the Ram had come loose due to it being handled during the move and being stored in various positions.  We also gave it a good vacuuming inside whilst we were at it.  PCs do attract a huge amount of dust.

I recall years ago buying a computer which clearly had a faulty motherboard and getting the run around by their telephone "helpline" - "reboot" "reset" all that.  However Dave is indeed an IT expert, that's his job.  He used to do all the IT work for where Julian worked and they became friends... so even though they have both moved on he's always happy to help us and we pay him if he has to come to the house as we have quite a complicated network set up at home with servers etc.

Our 2nd pc died because we didn't know you should take the side off periodically & remove the 'enormous' amounts of dust, the fan on 'something' got clogged up and overheated.  :o

Permanent job in this house, whenever the living room is vacuumed, to jam the Hoover pipe against the PC fan ventilation holes in the side of the 'box' - gets done much more often than eg skirting board LOL

Went near there - Platja de Aro (was 'Playa' then LOL) for a brilliant holiday in 1976 - camping, so in the car and we 'got about'.  I thought I'd been there and I had - next place along from Palamos - and a lot better class than the latter!

I'm pleased it still is to this day!

wow sedge -- great memories -- indeed it is very close to palamos-- we had local palamos prawns on this holiday !!!

don't be stirring up the catalans with the platja vs playa -- LOL

They're a lot  happier with the platja I believe!

Palamos was basically a fishing village - couple of bars only one of which had tables and chairs and waiters -rest were Local Bars for Local Hombres, and a small run-down funfair with a 'burger van' who sold the BEST freshly deep fried churros, and really really thick gloopy chocolate to scoop up with em.

Think some of the village houses were by then holiday accommodation - 'James Villas' type of properties - no hotels or even a Hostal.

Is the big Sunday morning market at San Feliu still operating?
