Length of cannula
« on: 08 May 2012, 07:10:00 PM »
Hi all,

I'm trying out the quickets now rather than the silhouette as it was leaving me with quite large red marks. Holes are much better but bg's have gone off a bit and I think it might be the 6mm cannula - is 6mm standard or is it for thin folk & kids? I'm still carrying a bit of baby weight but not a massive amount...still a standard size 12 really! Should I be on 9mm? Do you know, I have no idea what length my cannula's were on spirit! I just got sent them on repeat and I never really thought about it. I reckon these 6mm's are shorter than what I'm used to though...

Any thoughts?

Fiona, do a search on the pumping section of the forum.  I'm sure I've seen 8mm mentioned.

No, it's 6 or 9mm.

I have both, Fi. I'm a size 14 at the mo (and I'm probably being a little optimistic). I use 9mm in my flabby belly, and 6mm in hips, back and thighs. Basically the less flabby bits!
I've just placed an order and for the first time the woman questioned this. She didn't seem phased when I explained. It makes sense really. I definitely have more than an extra 3mm of fat on my belly compared to the other places ;)

I started on 9mm in my 'saline' week but moved to 6mm which are much better for me. (had 2 or 3 9mms kink when they seemed to hit muscle or something)

Now have the 6mm in my hip instead of stomach and seems to be fine. I think it's that pregnancy flab to blame in the stomach region! I will do the same Winni and try 9mm for stomach.

Mike - I am envious that 9mm in your stomach can hit muscle...hee hee ;-)

On a completely seperate note - if you're changing your infusion set but not your reservoir, how do you fill the tubing without having to rewind the reservoir bit? On spirit there was a function called 'prime infusion set' for this. I know I could just do a big bolus but it takes so long to fill that way. Or do you just do 'fill cannula' with a bigger amount? And that's another thing - on spirit the bolus goes in really fast whereas on medtronic it's so slow. I'm presming though that slow might mean better absorption? This was one of the biggest differences I noticed started medtronic. Oh and one more thing (!) I'm doing 1 unit to fill a quickset cannula - is that right?

Hee hee Fiona! :)

The cannula fill amount I was given for 6mm quick sets was 0.3u so 1u sounds a bit too much?

Whenever I've changed set but not reservoir I've re-used the tubing. Though I have dialled up a 4-5u cannula fill to shift a stubborn bubble out of the tube :)

Fi, I use 1u for a 6mm set and 1.5u for 9mm. Now I know that is a bit much, but I've found the extra stops any spikes I used to get after changing.
Like mike, I reuse the old tubing. But I find just rewinding and reprinting is much quicker than what you're suggesting. X

With the Spirit, the current sets come in the following lengths - Flexlink (90 degree Teflon) 8mm, 10mm.  Rapid-D - (90 degree steel - the cannula with the 'tail' of tubing on it) 6mm. 8mm, 10mm.  Tenderlink (angled, Teflon) 13mm & 17mm.
