On the topic of "no carb" meals
Pattidevans:
At 3.30 pm today, some 4hrs 30 after injecting for my brunch I was 8.1 so I did a 2u correction. At 7pmish, some 22 minutes before the insulin ran out (I'm relying on Apidra being out of my system at 4 hours and no reason to query that), I was 3.7. So I said to hubby "Oh er, snack time". He volunteered to go fetch something. Apparently we have no crisps or nuts in (hardly surprised, we only get them in if we are entertaining) so he came back with a bowl of cubed cheddar and salami. I thought, "Oh well, here's an opportunity to see what protein does" and I wasn't really desperate to correct at that point.
Well, approx 8 - 10 1cm cubes of cheddar and approx 8 - 10 similar cubes of Salami my BG had gone up 2mmol/L.
Please tell me how I can have a no carb meal to test basal? ??? ?
Amethyst:
Oh that happens to me too! I had scrambled egg for breakfast today, didn't think I needed to bolus but went from 6.2 to 8.8. I've had just nuts before now, in desperation, when nothing else available and found that my BG raised as a result. Does the act of just eating raise BG's somehow?
Moby:
remember that in the absence of carbs the body converts 50% of the protein into glucose (granny and eggs emoticon)
the body has to work harder to do this but maybe you had a mini liver dump coz you didnt eat any carbs? i know its no consolation but it happens to me too.
basically we are messing with the most complex biochemistry in the human body, we will NEVER understand it completely.
Pattidevans:
You are dead right Moby! I was thinking at the time that the fat would slow it all down but of course the fat would be in the equation as well... why therefore do T1s talk about no carb meals being a way to test their basal? Which really was why I posted the topic in the first place!
Liam:
They talk about it because they are told it is a usable method by their DNS / dietitian. I got the feeling when I did DAFNE that the dietitian knew it wasn't the best method but that she had to offer that advice because it was canon and because a lot of the people there wouldn't test if it meant not eating. I think most of us would agree it isn't the best method but it might be better than never testing basal?
It isn't something I've really looked at. The only time I've tried it was for breakfast to try and stop my BG going up if I didn't eat carbs / inject. My body wasn't interested it would go up if I ate protein and fat. I can normally eat small amounts of cheese and meat between meals without issue, never really ate a lot to see what would happen.
If this was a stand alone result I'd have said it was useless as it was on a borderline hypo and might have had a liver dump attached, but if I remember right you have said many times in the past that you can't eat more than a small bit of cheese without having it raise your BG.
