Hi
My name is Til and i'm a 61 year old male dx'd in december 2000 type 2
Originally on max dose of glyclacide
After 18 months of eratic BG's discovered sites like this and took the low carb route, religously stuck to a low carb diet for about 2~3 years but then (after my health improved) started to eat more carbs again, subsequently BG's began to rise.

My A1c is generally around 6 but when I got a 7.5 decided that I needed to get control again.

Have been on insulin (my choice) now for 18 months.

Still learning but feel that my BG's are well in control now that I understand the Basal and Bolus biits.
Must say that in my opinion the NHS do a very poor job of educating the diabetic, probably because so many just don't want to understand the condition.

Only recently have I learnt how to set the Basal level right thanks to a post on this site.

I take 20 units of Lantus split 10 at teatime 10 early morning.
Take 10 ~ 14 units of Apidra 3 times a day
No statins - cannot tolerate metformin even SR
Ramipril 10mg daily
Bisoprolol Hemifumerate 5mg daily (2 bouts of Atrial fibrilation) last one 3 years ago

large doses of vitamin C at least 4 gms daily

Take vitamin D3 10,000 units daily
Vitamin K2 5mg 3 times a week
Lots of Omega3
Alpha Lipoic Acid 600 mg daily

weight 100kgs height 6' presently trying to loose the belly

Married 2 boys 33 & 32
2 grand kids 3 & 2

Welcome to the forum Til ! Interesting that you too take vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 - I'm thinking you must be taking K2 as MK 4 ? I too am on a very low carb diet and doing well on it with sometimes repagnlinide.

homer:
Yes K2 (MK-4) 5mg
I would say that I am a moderate low carber 70~100 gms per day.
But I do like a red wine each night :o

Hi Til,

I have a glass of red wine every night too :) It's a natural oral hypoglycaemic thingie :)

MK-4 has a half life of just a couple of hours so if you're taking it you need to take it several times a day. MK-7, on the other hand, lasts several days and can be stored by the body so very much less is needed. One still needs at least 100 mcg per day of it (I take 150 mcg) which is why I now buy Life Extension Super K from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Extension-Advanced-Softgels-90-Count/dp/B004GW4S0G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343752539&sr=8-2-fkmr0 (I used to buy it from iHerb ;) ) It contains a bit of MK-4 too.

Here's an article about MK-7 regarding research in using it and cardiovascular health: http://menaq7.com/?page=cardiovascular-health

Vitamin K2 is particularly important for me because I have a heart defect - I'm taking it specifically to help that, and both my cardiologist and endocrinologist are very interested.

Which comes first?  The chicken or the egg?  If the NHS were a little more pro-active educating people then people might take more on board, but so many aren't interested as you say.  However I think the key is that so many GPs deny T2 patients any kind of wherewithal to gauge what their BGs are and paint the disease as "manageable by half yearly or even yearly Hba1cs" whilst at the same time telling people what horrible complications they may get.  This is well summed up by a comment by a nurse which was reported here.... "You don't want to test because your fingers will be too sore to read braille when you go blind".  Oh and of course appalling dietary advice... cynical?  Me?

Good, we are being useful!

I suppose you'd call me "moderate" carb since I manage well (I think) on around 70 - 90g per day carb counting.

You seem to know a good deal about how to control BGs so please jump in and answer Qs and don't forget yourself that no Q is regarded as silly.  I still have to ask tons.
