Newbie - type 1 diabetic for 27 years now pregnant

(1/1)

OX4d-Lisa:
Hello my name is Lisa.

I have Type 1 diabetes that was diagnosed June 1985 at the age of 10. Always on insulin, now on NovoRapid and Lantus. Had an over active thyroid but had radiation treatment 10 years ago now underactive and taking Levothyoxine 125g per day. Last Hba1c 7.2 about 4 weeks ago. Pregnancy due date is 1 January 2013 but week 38 is 18 December 2012 so baby will be here before Christmas. Currently 18 weeks pregnant.

My dad and brother are both type 1, diagnosed at 15 and 12 years my dads mother was type 1 at the age of 33 after sadly miscarrying 7 babies she only lived until the age of 51 when i was just 5. I am thankful that medicine ancrisis eyes care has improved so much. Recently my dads sister and brother have been diagnosed diabetic. I am guessing my children will develope disbetes.

My control has been ok ranging from 4.4 - 8 but this weeks it seems to have gone crazy from 2.2 - 16.4 :(

This is my first baby and I am now 37 years of age.

Is my control going to get worse as my pregnancy goes on?

Lisa

Hi Lisa and welcome to the forum... what an amazing family history.

Just so you know, one of our mums in here had her first healthy baby at 37 after being diabetic since a child, she's since had a 2nd one equally healthy, which is why she may not be in very quickly to talk to you.

No, but your insulin needs will change.  Have a read of this article, it's American which means the levels are unfamiliar to us, but divide by 18 to reach our numbers http://www.diabeticmommy.com/sp-pregnancy-diabetes-bd-faq-answers.html#2  It's normal for insulin needs to be higher in the first 3 months.  Do you carb count?

I also suggest you post your introduction in our pregnancy section and I am sure you will get some responses from new mums and currently expectant mums though it's a bit quiet atm due to peeps being on holiday.

don't forget, no question is silly in this forum and no one is judgemental.

Hi Lisa

Yes your blood sugars will go berserk for the whole 9 months, all those preg hormones, growth hormone spurts for your baby etc.

Lots of our mums have found ways round this though it does mean testing about every 2 hours and taking lots of correction doses, things like injecting a lot earlier before meals and loads of little rinky dinks like that - anything to avoid the spikes, the lows don't affect your baby anywhere near as much as highs might.

As Patti said - please post exactly the same questiuons in the preg section, a lot of the mums only have a chance to peruse that part of the forum, esp those with more than one child !  LOL

OX4d-Lisa:
Thank you for your replies ladies. I have now posted in the pregnancy section as advised.

Carb counting I am sort of trying but finding it very hard. I am already testing my bloody about 15 times a day and correcting giving correction doses if above 10 not sure if that's correct or not.

I will continue my discussion there.

Regards Lisa

Amethyst:
A warm welcome and congratulations!
