V this may sound controversial and I don't mean it to... but you suffer quite often with UTIs.  Has it occurred to you that you and your husband might be passing these back and forth?  I know you get cured and so on and then it comes back, but has he been tested meantime?  It's not unknown and actually quite common.  Suggest he gets tested cos me may have no symptoms?

Oooh, adding to that, have you ever been tested for something called BV ? - bacterial vaginosis?

I know all that it will say about discharge and you'll say you haven't got any but believe you me when I was getting cystitis and thrush every few months - wasn't D then - as soon as someone decided I had BV and gave me and boyfriend (who became hubby #1) the appropriate AB - I never had either again for 30-odd years.

The second time I had it I actually had hubby #2.  I got fed up and made an appt with the local GUM, I forget what they call em now but their name has gone even more PC !  We both went and we both got the AB just to be sure in case he'd got summat they hadn't tested for as men can't get it funnily enough.  Vile things.  But they do it.  Only vile because they aren't coated and so you can taste em however quick you swallow them and they taste bitter.  But it's only for about 3 or 4 days.

Thanks Gramma x

Patti about 3 UTIs back I think it was I suggested to hubby he might have a UTI symptomless and to go see doc, he had antibiotics for it then was clear. Other than once though he hasn't picked it up off me. I do think my little one might have one at the moment... I'm going to call the doc for him and get him seen today. It's not just intimately that these things can be passed on, I worry just sharing the bath is probably enough. This one is nasty, several days later i still have tummy cramps, though of course it's always worst in the mornings after not peeing all night.

They have said I may need an operation to put a stent in the urethra I think it is, as women of "my age" who've carried several babies the tube can kink and then the urine stays in the kink, like the Ubend on the toilet I suppose and then the infection rises up through the body.

My kidneys are really sore too so I guess this one will take a few different antibiotics, that's whats happened previously.. my bgs are coming down slowwwwly, so i think the infection is starting to relent.

Jenny BV is the fishy smelling one isn't it? I was tested for that once but it was just thrush at the time. Haven't got any discharge and I'd notice! I still notice when I ovulate and I'm not even actually looking for it! Must admit though these UTIs reduce sex life to zero, too much pain!

You and I should form a 'club' or some kind of a group for UTI sufferers.  I spent the day yesterday in and out of the loo - every hour on the hour and all night long too.  Finally this morning I went to the Immediate Care Clinic and saw a Doctor there.  She gave me an antibiotic......guess I didn't keep enough fingers and toes crossed and maybe the cranberry capsules is just a myth?  Anyway, you aren't alone.

So sorry V, to hear about your boils.  They are most miserable!  My Dad used to be bothered with them in his 'private' area.  I hope the AB will help you  recover soon.  My Grandmother used to get the boils too, she would sometime put a hot, moist facecloth on the boil followed by a cold facecloth.  I guess they didn't have many ABs when my Gran was around.

Have had them down there too before, not pleasant!

BGs are never good with boils am lucky if they go below 20. Have increased everything but!

They're on the mend at least, still leaking "ick" but arent as painful as they were. On my second type of antibiotic for them.

Poor you, V, sorry to read that you have more of the little blighters  :(  Touch wood, I don't think I've had a boil in my life - had some nasty spots, but when does a big spot become a boil? Hope you feel better soon.

Boils dont necessarily have a "top" to them, they're really deep in soft fleshy material really, like genitalia or I've had them in the skin under my eyes quite a few times. And they're hot to touch, and the pain radiates outwards... like the ones on my scalp right now the pain was right down my neck, my throat was swollen and lumpy, a feeling like sharp peanuts in my throat and that whole hemisphere of my head was a nice shade of purply-red! Now they're healing up, my bgs are down to 15-ish, they've reached the skin and the pus/blood is leaking out.. have to keep mopping my neck... I know, horrible!! Thank God they're behind the hairline.

Hubby is like.. "so you didn't scratch that area? You didnt touch it at all?? how do you get those!! That's disgusting!!"

I'm convinced it's stress/anxiety....I blooming don't know... I'm just lucky I guess!

FWIW, a kindly older Nurse once told my Dad that the tendency to boils can come from many sources, main ones being being "run down" (as they described it in his day) and a lot of stress.  She also advised my Dad to eat a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.  When my Dad was much younger he was lucky if he had food, much less fruit and/or vegetables.  You've had a lot on your plate and any way you describe it - boils just are not fun!  Thinking positive thoughts and sending them your way.

Ven, I sometimes get boils on my "private" areas mostly in the crease where my knicker elastic goes. I've had them on and off for years (long before diabetes) and apparently it can be down to a condition called hidradenitis suppurativa. My dad had it also and so did my sister. The sweat glands get inflamed and it can lead to long lasting painful boils, mostly in the armpits and groin but also other areas. Sometimes they can last months as they don't come to a proper head. Over time they can track together and form larger boils and they seem to take forever to go.

The best thing I have found to keep them at bay is an antiseptic skin wash called Stellisept (you can buy it online) you use it in the shower, leave it on 5 minutes and rinse off. It helps keep the skin clear of bacteria which can get in and cause the boils. Or tea tree is supposed to be good too. I also take a high strength zinc capsule once a day, zinc picolinate is the best. Touch wood I haven't had one for months now and the 2 old grumbling ones I had had lingering around seem to have finally gone! Your boils might be different from my boils but taking Zinc would almost certainly help as it is very good for skin healing.

Don't get just any old zinc from the supermarket Ven, it won't have enough zinc in it. You need a high dose zinc like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FSC-Zinc-Picolinate-30mg-with-Copper-90-Capsules-BOGOF-/230650983532?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Vitamins_Supplements&hash=item35b3deb46c.

Or if you can get to somewhere like Holland and Barrett, try this one http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=219&prodid=638&cid=97 or even this one http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=78&prodid=438&cid=97

chelated zinc is supposedly easier to absorb.

If you are going to a shop for it, check the amount of Elemental Zinc (small print on the back) and you want 15mg or over, a bit of copper is useful too because too much zinc can deplete the body of copper.

You must eat when you take it otherwise it'll give you belly ache. Chelated and zinc picolinate are supposedly the easiest on the stomach although if I take it without food it'll still make me queasy.

I got the Stellisept from here http://www.jpmproducts.co.uk/retail_product_detail.asp?ClientGroupID=4&ProdID=1092&ProdTypeID=98 I got the foam one. It lasts a long time. I don't use it all over me, only in the areas where I tend to get the boils. What i do is shower normally with whatever I would normally use, rinse off and then use the stellisept on those areas, leave 30 seconds and rinse off. I am not using it now as touch wood I seem to have beaten the little sods into submission!

If you have an outbreak it can be useful to take upto 60mg a day (3 or 4 of those 15mg tablets) if your stomach can tolerate it, but don't do that long term because it's hard on the  stomach and can deplete you of copper. When I first started I took 3 a day until they went and now I have just gone down to one a day.
