I have had ( but not recently) hypos that just won't finish --
as you are pumping it is totally unlikely to be some "pooled" insulin

Hi Paul - Thanks for bringing that up, but does pumping preclude pooled insulin?  What about those times when you are lobbing in corrections and it just looks like you are bolussing water... could that not cause pooled insulin - or rather, might the bolusses you made have been pooling?

the metformin , walking , and an overestimation of your carbs appear to have combined
I don't disagree that it could well have been the combination as you say... I am just mystified as to why it took so long and so many carbs to fix it.  It's never happened to me before.  Once before when I visited the physio and she did some work on my buttocks saying they were bumpy, I had a series of hypos for the rest of the day, but I could get BGs up between them.

sorry for late reply ------- have been reading through some older threads and came across this one.

my honest answer is that as we are only injectiong ( through cannula) 1 insulin -- it makes the pooled long acting question start to disappear

but as to whether we can have a crap day BG wise -- and then at a point in time either days , weeks , or months later have a sustained hypo due to pooling --

that is sort of a million pound question ( in the diabetic lottery world ) LOL

It isn't only long acting that does it Paul - it's 'insulin' !  LOL

However it's more common with longer acting ones and Lantus is a major suspect if you've used it in the past or still do - purely because of what Patti said - the crystalisation process of its action.  And of course there's no way whatever of telling what one it is letting go or where the 'pool' is/was situated.

Gosh, that hypo was a long time ago.  Remember it vividly though.

another scary scenario is when lantus does not act like a long acting and seems to run like a river almost immediately after taking ( I have had that happen 3 or 4 times )
and it is a non stop hypo for a few hours

that is something to do with the crystalisation not occuring I think .

funnily enough -- these episodes actually happened before I discovered the internet properly -- So I was busy blaming myself for probably taking a double bolus dose

it is only in recent years I have found out that lantus can ( if it hits a fatty deposit or some other funny type of injection  place ) actually not crystalise at all and act like a fast acting insulin.

that is scarily true Patti-- none of my diabetic therapy group has grasped the info I have provided them on joining this forum.

it is such a shame --- the wealth of shared information and experience is invaluable.

I wonder why they don't at least have a peek Paul.  Are they the sort of people who think the internet is a "dangerous place?"

I am really not sure -- we have a mixed age range -- from 26 to 68 years old
so nobody is beyond the net so to speak..
