Several members have informed me that they are no longer getting notifications.  This seems to have happened after a recent update of the forum software.  I have looked at their profiles/notifications to find that no subjects have been ticked to receive notifications.  So if you are no longer receiving notifications please go to your profile (link at the top of every page) then “modify profile”and “notifications” and tick the subjects you wish to be notified on”

Ummm... perhaps if you check it now?  When I went into your profile to look there was nothing checked at all.  Alan was saying the same thing, but I think he's sorted now.  If you aren't sorted then I shall have to ask Mike if he can see anything in the software that might be causing this.

Hi Patti - I received no notification of this post, yet at the top of the page it has a button allowing me to 'Unnotify', just as it had several hours ago when I checked :(  Nothing in my spam folder either......your other post, topic heading 'forum sections'  I was not notified of either I'm afraid :(

Well nothing takes effect until you turn off and restart a puter - it's not actually saved permanently till you do it.  And if you happen to have set the device to 'don't save cookies' then it won't save em anyway.

When you check a box on a forum or whatever, it takes effect on the forum's software, otherwise peeps would be forever having to restart their computers after they wrote a post just to get notifications. Anyway, I never had to check the box to get notifications as the box in my Profile is set to get notifications to any post I contribute to. Anyway, my 'puter goes off every night and here I am this morning and no notification of Sedge's post in this thread. My 'puter also saves cookies, I don't have it set to 'don't save cookies'. It's something amiss with the forum software I'm afraid......

You have to remember that even though the mods are familiar with the front end commands in the forum, none of them, including me, know anything about the backend software.  This is why Mike kindly volunteered to help out when Terry retired from being active.  Web design and maintenance is Mike’s business and income, so I am grateful if he spares the time to help out when he is so busy.

I have had a look at the forum that deals with Simple Machines issues (the software upon which the forum runs). Whilst I had first thought that the problem may have been caused by the software update,  I have now identified that the issue may be something to do with our server.  This seems likely since the forum was recently transferred by the hosts to a new server.  I had thought we’d cleared the issues, but maybe not.  I have emailed and asked Mike if he could please spare some time in the pre-Christmas rush to investigate.   Meantime I ask for your patience.  If you log in and click “all unread since last visit” you should see any posts made in response to yours.

Thanks for the explanation Patti ! Yes I'm coming on to the website and checking "all unread posts since last visit". I hope that Mike has an idea about the issue, not that it's any trouble to click "all unread posts since last visit", it's just that notifications not working was unexpected and a puzzle. Happy Christmas !

Wow, looking for a suitable Christmas smiley and found there's a toilet one  :toilet:  - why is that ? I have frequency so that is very appropriate for me personally since I'm there so often  ;D

I think I have found what the issue was. It was the way SMF was configured to send the notifications on the old server.

I believe notifications should now be working again - apologies if people are getting a deluge of mails.

I will keep an eye on it over the next couple of days.
