OMG Hot cross buns!
« on: 27 March 2018, 10:14:09 PM »
I bought a pack from Tesco. Nice.  Was hypo yesterday late pm.  Hubby toasted one and we shared it.  It did seem to be OKish as a correction after the glucose.  So this morning I thought Oh Yeah brekkie.  Went online and looked up nutrition for Tesco Hot cross buns.  Was not wearing my glasses and was surprised to see  14.52 per bun.  Bolussed for 15 and shot up to high teens.  Just checked Eeek!  Per bun 39.82 (of which sugars 14.52). Mrs Evans wear your bloody spectacles!

Been like a roller coaster ever since.  Yesterday went out for lunch and the only thing I fancied on the menu was pasta with chicken, pancetta and bacon.  Ha ha... and for the next two hours I sat around 6.  Was congratulating myself until an hour later it shot up to 10.  Then remembered extended bonuses needed for pasta.  I have it so rarely I forgot.

Oh well, my two days of trying to be “normal” are now over...

Always a cycle, isn't it? "Oh, I can have some pasta, surely! Normal people have pasta, it's not an unreasonable thing to d-- nooooope. Okay, not having any more pasta for a while. ... ... ... You know what I haven't had in a long time? Pasta! I can have some pasta, surely..."

The plot thickens... yesterday lunch time I had home made soup, approx 12g carb per portion with two thin slices of Coburg loaf (white crusty bread) toasted.  approx 36g carb and I shot up to 20 (came back down pretty quick).  Whilst last night I had home made garlic prawn and courgette risotto and never went over 6.6.  I suppose it was the fat content as it had butter and lots of Parmesan in it,

Lorraine bought half a dozen from the local supermarket. No nutrition advice but I thought just one wouldn't be that bad. I had one halved, toasted and liberally buttered at Good Friday morning tea and another about two hours after dinner.

I am now starting my fourth week of Libre. Two spikes stand out well above the rest in that 21 days. Guess which two.

Only now has my fading memory recalled results were much the same two years ago, last time I ate one.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

It IS such a pity isn't it Alan. They are a seasonal treat (or should be, though some supermarkets seem to have them from Christmas on) and the smell is just tooo tempting!

I hate the products that give you carbs/100g and leave the mental arithmetic to you, e.g. there are 34gm/100gm but the packs are 73gm and 147gm! Must be  nightmare for those who don't do arithmetic (like my other half)!

I did get some Hot-X buns and noticed the cheaper ones has less carbs (i.e. less dried fruit).

True - but then I wouldn't enjoy em half as much!  LOL

But all Tesco's, Morrison's, Sainsbury's etc have the info 'per bun' on them.

Actually the pack of Tesco own brand hot cross buns I bought had no nutrition information whatsoever on them.  They did have the info on-line though, which is where I got it.

Oh LOL - we had 'Finest' cos they were reduced - and they had their info on the back.  Just as well they were '2 for the price of' cos No 1 daughter came yesterday and didn't leave us short!  I don't begrudge sharing them obviously but when you thought Oh I can have one today and one tomorrow or whatever it is and then you haven't enough left when you were looking forward to enjoying them - well it's just a bit deflating!

I've decided to treat them like Jennifer's carb-free Birthday cake - but only once a year :). I restrict that to three occasions: Birthday, Christmas Dinner and now Good Friday. I reckon my body can heal the spikes thrice annually.
